Dresden is rightly called the “Florence of the North”. Like its Italian namesake it has several world-class art collections.
The baroque Zwinger Palace has an important picture gallery with works by old masters, including the world-famous “Sistine Madonna” by Raphael. For classical music lovers there is the Semperoper (Saxon State Opera). For art lovers, in the inner new town there are plenty of antique shops with paintings, furniture and Meissner and Dresdner porcelain treasures to be snapped up.
